Soup & Sandwich 10/16/25

Our Gertrude Simmons Memorial Soup and Sandwich Lunch was held on Thursday, October 16th, 2025. A nice warm bowl of soup for all of those who made soups or salads, helped out, or attended the lunch. Special thanks to N.A.U.W. and Linda (Gertrude’s daughter) for their help. The lunch was our way of thanking essential workers and volunteers in our neighborhood who take care of us every day. It was wonderful to meet new people as well as catch up with neighbors and friends.

Gertrude Simmons Memorial Soup & Sandwich Lunch

March 21, 2024 Oak Lane Presbyterian Church

Thursday, March 21, 2024 was our Gertrude Simmons Memorial Soup & Sandwich Lunch. Gertrude originated the idea back in 2013. PWOL sponsored the event every year until COVID arrived. The Christian Education Ministry decided to revive the lunch to honor Gertrude, who passed in 2023. The goal has always been to thank and to give back to the Oak Lane community. Nearby churches, Elwood School, the library, firefighters, police, Tree Tenders, and Laurel Square Rehab were invited.

Wonderful homemade soups and a variety of breads, meats, and cheeses were available to build your own sandwich. Gertrude’s daughter, Linda came to help serve. Theresa’s National Association of University Women (NAUW) did a fabulous job with the set-up and serving. It was wonderful to be able to chat and chew with our fellow community members.
